Pollination Programs

Urban beekeeping is a thriving initiative that connects our community partners in a shared commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Through collaboration with local businesses and community centers we have established a network of urban apiaries that not only support the health of our local ecosystems but also educate the community about the importance of pollinators. Together, we are fostering a greener, more vibrant urban environment where bees and people can thrive.

Since putting our first lavender plant in the ground, we dreamed of and planned for the addition of bees to our farm. We knew that this addition would provide a range of benefits; pollinating our lavender flowers and helping them to create more blooms and a richer, more vibrant harvest. Having bees also aligns beautifully with our commitment to ethical growing and support of a bio-diverse farm. I reached out to Dhyana at Symbeeosis because her “small apiary with a big heart” seemed a perfect fit for R&B Lavender in terms of philosophy and approach to beekeeping. Offering a healthy and calm environment for visitors is part of our vision at R&B Lavender, and we have come to learn, first hand, that the bees provide a deeply calming experience while they work away in the lavender fields. Their constant gentle buzzing encourages us to be at peace, offering moments of serenity in our busy days. Time in the lavender among the pollinators is an unbelievable way to reset and restore amid nature’s rhythms. -R&B Lavander

Honeybees play a crucial role in lavender fields by pollinating the flowers, ensuring a bountiful harvest of both lavender and honey. Their activity supports the health and vitality of the lavender plants, enhancing the quality of the essential oils produced. Additionally, the presence of honeybees in these fields creates a more balanced ecosystem that benefits wild bees. As honeybees pollinate the lavender, they also help maintain the floral diversity that wild bees rely on, promoting a healthier and more resilient environment for all pollinators.

When AtkinsRealis first considered enhancing the green spaces surrounding the historic Elgin Courthouse, they looked to nature for inspiration. Recognizing the importance of supporting urban biodiversity, they approached Symbeeosis to introduce bees to their environment. Last year, we placed the first hive on the courthouse grounds. The bees not only contributed to pollinating local plant life, but their presence added a calming, natural rhythm to this busy urban setting.

Encouraged by the success of the initial hive, AtkinsRealis expanded the initiative this year with a second hive, further committing to the environmental and community benefits of urban beekeeping. As the bees continue their vital work, they help create a more balanced ecosystem in the heart of the city, supporting both plant diversity and local pollinators. The partnership with AtkinsRealis exemplifies how urban environments can support thriving ecosystems while contributing to the well-being of their communities. We’re proud to be part of this initiative, bringing the magic of bees to the heart of urban landscapes.
